The leaves may be fading and winter very well might be on the horizon for those of us in northwest Wisconsin but that doesn’t mean that the fall fun has to stop anytime soon – Northwest Wisconsin is famous for its incredible ATVing opportunities, no matter which county you visit or reside in. Explore hundreds of miles of scenic trails that have some of the best stops along the way for shopping, restaurants and lodging. You can’t go wrong with choosing a four-wheeled destination; however, we’ve asked around and have come up with some of our favorites that will surely result in a blood-pumping, fun-filled time.

ASHLAND COUNTY ATV TRAILS

Find miles and miles of ATV trails in Ashland County. The Tri-County Corridor is the main artery that runs between Ashland, Bayfield, and Douglas County with spurs in every county. This 62-mile abandoned railbed makes for a scenic and historic adventure that is sure to please. This secluded and peaceful ride is the perfect way to connect with nature while exploring on four wheels. Experience an abundance of wildlife as you travel through the unique terrain. Be sure to stop in Ashland, Mellen, Butternut, Glidden, and Clam Lake for full-service amenities including gas, groceries, shopping and lodging. Ashland is known as the retail hub of the county with some of the best shopping opportunities you’ll find around – you’ll just want to make sure you have enough space on your ride if you want to shop ‘til you drop. 

SAWYER COUNTY‘S FALL ON FOUR WHEELS

Experience fall on four wheels while spending your days in Sawyer County. The fall color peak season may be past but we can promise you that Trail #31 aims to please regardless of the season. With over 200 miles of maintained trails to explore, there’s truly a route for everyone. If you’re looking for a sense of adventure that will get your adrenaline going, Sawyer County’s ATV/UTV trails are growing in popularity due to their challenging, yet incredibly scenic and rewarding trails. Some even call them the best in the state. Have a chance to truly explore the Northwoods of Wisconsin as you take in the breathtaking forests, rolling hills, and scenic lake shores. Food, fuel, parking and lodging are all available making this an incredible destination for ATV and UTV exploration.

WASHBURN COUNTY‘S ATV ENTHUSIASTS REJOICE

ATV enthusiasts can truly have it all while exploring the 100+ miles of breathtaking views while partaking in Washburn County’s ATV Scenic Tour. Learn more about the area as you explore this self-guided tour with nearly 40 unique points of interest marked along the way – creating an ATV experience like no other. With most of the ATV trails in Washburn County staying open through late fall, you still have plenty of time to grab a friend, gather your gear, and get to exploring. Get more in tune with nature as you pass by the Lost Lake Swamp, explore an old homestead site where you can see remnants of the foundations of the original buildings, and/or get a picture with Billy the Giant Bluegill as you pass by Point 35. Not only are the trails and tour incredible but the shopping, lodging and restaurants in this area are also some of the very best.

BAYFIELD COUNTY‘S WELL-GROOMED TRAILS

Bayfield County offers over 180 miles of well-groomed trails (plus hundreds of miles of accessible forest roads) in the “Home of Wisconsin’s National Treasures.” Take a ride through the breathtaking Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and end up at the Old Baldy Lookout, where you’ll get a once-in-a-lifetime view of Northwest Wisconsin. Ride a loop through the forest and then make a stop at the South Shore, Red Cliff, Washburn, Iron River, or head all the way south to Barnes or the Cable-Namekagon area if you’re really looking for an adventure.
